Go with the Flow: How the Wetlands Were Shaped by the Rhine and by People

Format: Walk

Suitable for: Adults, company outings, national and international tourist groups

Available in: German, English

Description: The Urdenbacher Kämpe wetlands are both beautiful and varied. Meadow orchards, the River Rhine and its banks, wetland woods, as well as meadows and fields form a unique landscape and provide the habitat for many animal and plant species. Shaped over centuries by the River Rhine, the Urdenbacher Kämpe is one of the last uncontrolled river wetlands along the Lower Rhine and is subject to regular flooding. The people who live here have also had a tangible and visible impact. In my two-hour themed walk we will explore the wetlands and learn about the landscape and its characteristic features.

Itinerary: This walk centres around the western part of the nature reserve, starting with the meadow orchards, following the banks of the Rhine, and then returning through agricultural fields and meadows. Six stops along the way provide opportunities to learn about special features of the ecosystem including plants and animals, and about the wetlands as a landscape shaped by people.

Please be sure to wear stout shoes and bring waterproof clothing.
